What is Informal Reading Inventory

This informal Reading Inventory (IRI) has been designed to assist teachers in assessing pupilsfrom the Pre-Primer Level to the Grade Six Level in primary schools. It is expected that this IRI will do the following. Identify the pupil`s strengths and weaknesses in word recognition skills.Identify the pupil`s performance during oral reading.Determine the pupil`s instructional reading level so as to instructorleon  present appropriate reading material in the classroom.Determine the pupil`s frustration reading level so as to avoid presenting reading material that is too difficult for the pupil.Determine the pupil`s ability to answer main idea, detail, vocabulary, literal and inferential questions after reading or listening to a story/passage.Determine the pupil`s listening capacity.
